The Carpenters’ Company supports the historically important Clinton-Baker Pinetum in the Lee Valley, just outside Hertford.
The Pinetum contains over 130 species of conifer trees from around the world, many of which are over 100 years old. Work is underway to widen the variety of conifers cultivated at the Pinetum and to safeguard this invaluable collection for future generations.
The Pinetum covers 4.3 hectares and was first planted in 1767 by Sir William Baker. Its many interesting features include a Victorian grotto, hidden until recently in the overgrowth. It is also a wildlife habitat, attracting many birds such as the goldcrest, long tailed tits, crossbills, woodcocks, and little owls.
